Trailer Tuesday: Rock of Ages

logan j. fowler and bill bodkin go back to the 80s…

Theater, Rent, No Thanks, Undecided: Rent. Rock of Ages may not be the best movie musical to enter the ring in quite some time, but I can say it looks fun. While the trailer failed to get any chuckles out of me, the music within definitely intrigues, and maybe the brief clips we’ve seen haven’t revealed the good stuff, unlike most trailers. Here’s hoping. Rock of Ages also features a pretty solid cast, with Alec Baldwin, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Paul Giamatti, Russell Brand and Tom Cruise as the larger than life rock star Stacee Jaxx. Fans of the Broadway show Rock of Ages is based on complained about Cruise getting that part, but you know what, I’m willing to see Cruise cut loose, like his role in Tropic Thunder, albeit it’s a bit different. In any case, Rock of Ages will be watch at home fare for certain, as part of me doesn’t view it as not watchable for some aspects. –LJF

Theater, Rent, No Thanks, Undecided: Rent. I really want to be interested in this movie; I sincerely and honestly do. I have an unabashed love for 80s metal and the film is littered with actors I like (Alec Baldwin, Russell Brand, Paul Giamatti, Tom Cruise), but there’s been nothing in these trailers that has even sparked an iota of excitement in me. The trailers have no focus — is Cruise’s Stacee Jaxx the lead character, is it the two generic good-looking male and female lead characters who’ll be pitted in some cliched romance or is it one big ensemble piece? If someone could tell me, that’d be awesome. My curiosity about Rock of Ages is merely how they incorporate all my favorite 80s metal songs into the plot of the film…and that curiosity can wait to DVD. –BB
