Trailer Tuesday: Dredd 3D

bill bodkin and logan j. fowler look at the latest take on the comic book hero…

Theater, Rent, No Thanks, Undecided? Rent (but maybe theater?). It’s odd to think that such an obscure comic book character is garnering such positive buzz, but yet, here we are. Dredd 3D is a complete overhaul of the Sylvester Stallone 1995 vehicle, in which the main character plays “judge, jury, and executioner.” The Stallone version left folks with a bad taste in their mouths, but Karl Urban is back in the helmet (which apparently the titular character never takes off in the comics. Sorry Sly, but Urban’s got you there) to set things right in reboot fashion. I’ve heard nothing but good things about Dredd 3D, that this film is a action packed good time, and based on that, I’m severely curious now, despite the fact I wasn’t remotely interested in this when it was first announced. With that said, I’ll definitley see it one way or another, a surefire rental if anything. –LJF

Theater, Rent, No Thanks, Undecided? Rent. I saw the original Judge Dredd in the theater and it has been a guilty pleasure of mine for a very long time. It’s not a particularly good movie, but it’s loud, dumb and kinda fun. With this version of Dredd, I think we’ll see something that’s actually a lot better. Karl Urban has always been a solid chaarcter actor and I think he’ll do a really solid job as the Judge. However, Olivia Thrilby as his sidekick? I don’t know if Juno’s BFF will make a convincing action heroine. Overall I think Dredd’s going to be a solid rental filled with big explosions and high octane action, however I think there’s going to be enough weaknesses (plotholes, weak supporting cast) that’ll keep me out of the cinema. –BB
