Notable Openings This Weekend: The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones, The World’s End, You’re Next
As we enter the end of the summer, this is where the box office takes a vacation to Hawaii. We aren’t looking at big money makers this weekend. With the exception of one movie that has a small, yet rabid fan base, I don’t think anyone’s been clamoring for any of these new releases.
Already opening on Wednesday was The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones, the 805th attempt at “Oh, this will attract the Harry Potter/Twilight crowd.” No it won’t. Remember The Host earlier this year? This will do not disastrous, but forgettable business. Next.
Speaking of next, how about You’re Next? Aside from seeing creepy posters, I haven’t seen to much advertising on this one, but with The Conjuring and The Purge doing well earlier this summer, horror seems to be at a steady pace right now. While I don’t think it will do as good as those films, You’re Next should bring in solid business,
And then we have The World’s End, the latest from director Edgar Wright. Edgar Wright is part of that holy trinity with Joss Whedon and Guillermo del Toro of “Oh my God, these guys are so awesome, you can’t even comprehend their awesomeness.” Just for the record, I like Edgar Wright. Please don’t hurt me. I suppose you could compare this to This is the End, but that had more of a mainstream appeal, and the success of that movie probably hurts The World’s End. “Oh…didn’t we just see this movie?” The World’s End will bring in typical Edgar Wright numbers…barely get into the top five.
How Will It All Break Down…
You’re Next wins the day on a quiet weekend, with Lee Daniels’ The Butler and We’re the Millers holding off the newer entries in a pretty ho-hum weekend.
