Notable Openings This Weekend: Bad Grandpa, The Counselor
It’s a pretty mellow weekend for the most part. So does that mean Gravity will once again reign supreme for the fourth weekend in a row? It’s Space Vs. Ridley Scott Vs. One joke stretched out over 90 minutes. Let’s see who wins…
On the surface, The Counselor seems poised for a Box Office win, right? Legendary director. Ridiculous cast. Yadda, yadda, yadda. But we know better, don’t we? Ridley Scott hasn’t exactly been delivering a quality product lately. I know there’s a lot of people looking forward to this one, but after Prometheus, I have my Ridley Scott blinders up…I’m not getting suckered in again. And while the cast for this film looks stacked, star power is almost non-existent these days. The trailers look boring and uninspired, and with a Rotten Tomatoes score of 36% right now, I think this movie is more poised to tank.
Then we have Bad Grandpa, some one joke Johnny Knoxville creation…sigh. And while I’d rather run head first into a brick wall and fall into a pit of alligators and poisonous snakes then see this movie, I fear it’s going to do very well. There’s no getting around the fact that the previous Jackass film (Jackass 3D) took in a $50 Million weekend. It’s a comedy that’s hitting at the right time, and clearly has an audience. Yay.
How Will It All Break Down…
Bad Grandpa over performs and beats Gravity for the #1 spot, and we have to read countless headlines of how Bad Grandpa was the movie to finally take down Gravity, making it seem even more impressive than it really is. Oh, well.
P.S. The Counselor absolutely bombs.
