Dikembe – Mediumship
I was recently dragged to go see a band called Weatherbox at Asbury Lanes, in Asbury Park, NJ and I am so glad I ended up going because while I was there, I came across an awesome rising band called Dikembe, who just released a new record called Mediumship. As a huge fan of the band Brand New, I was very pleased to find that this album has a very similar sound to a post- Deja Entendu Brand New, which is the sound that a lot of people feel was the band’s best, before putting out their newest material. If you are into Deja Entendu, Dikembe’s Mediumship is just for you.
Dikembe is not a band you would expect to hail from Gainesvilles, Florida, a city known for basically only two bands: Hot Water Music (post hardcore), and Against Me! (folk punk). This band has found its own niche in terms of an original sound, and has separated itself from the rest of the area, using an ominous, slow and sad album that hits hard at the right times- all the perfect mix of emotional greatness that one could ask for as a listener. It has the power to take the mind on a journey through whatever lead vocalist Steven Gray was going through at the time of writing this album, and will not disappoint. – Matt DeBenedetti
