Various Artists – Guardians of the Galaxy: Awesome Mix Volume 1
We couldn’t let you leave a piece about Summer 2014 without taking a chance to heap even more praise on Guardians of the Galaxy.
Summer 2014 was a nice little comeback for the soundtrack. The Fault in Our Stars had a soundtrack filled to the brim with YA hits of the moment that the masses just ate up. We had the requisite Zach Braff indie all-star gathering that was the soundtrack to Wish I Was Here. But, neither of them compared to Awesome Mix Volume 1, the official soundtrack to Guardians.
Like the film itself, it was an unexpectedly amazing. The mix of ’70s chestnuts that worked beautifully in the film and in your ear buds. From Redbone’s “Come and Get Your Love” which opened the film, to Bowie’s awesome (but oft forgotten) “Moonage Daydream” to climactic use of The Five Stairsteps’ “O-o-h Child” this soundtrack is a nostalgia kick for those who were around to hear these cuts in their prime (and those of us who grew up on this music) and a treasure chest of great pop music for younger, less 70s-educated music fans.
And even if you hate every song on this soundtrack (and it’d be nearly impossible for that to happen), you always have Blue Swede’s “Hooked on a Feeling.” If you can’t get happy listening to this song…I’ve got nothing for you. -Bill Bodkin
