31 Days of Horror 2014: Ghostbusters 2

After years of lawsuits and bankruptcy, the Ghostbusters come out of retirement when the sorcerer inside a painting at the museum begins to cause all sorts of supernatural trouble in the city, including a river of slime running through the sewers that reacts to the negativity of the people above.

This year, Sundays are the “Day of Rest” so to speak. There will be a Halloween related light film or a horror comedy to give us all a day to relax after six straight days of brutality. This week we are watching Ghostbusters 2.

If you haven’t caught on to the pattern happening yet, I am focusing on sequels in this year’s 31 Days of Horror. Ghostbusters 2 happens to be one of my all-time favorite sequels and so, I had to add it to this year’s list. Besides, I have supplied a two day dose of Sigourney Weaver, for which you can thank me later.

Ghostbusters 2 is full of some quality quotable one liners but the film also has so many good creepy parts. The Titanic scene alone used to terrify me as a child. I had no idea what the Titanic was at that point in my life, but I knew it was obviously a sunken ship and that those people probably shouldn’t have been walking up onto the shores of New York.

The scene where Janosz (Peter MacNicol) shows up dressed as an old woman and kidnaps baby Oscar was another good scary part. Sure, it is absolutely absurd now but try telling that to five year old me.

Dan Akroyd and the late Harold Ramis were geniuses when it came to story and character creation as Ghostbusters 2 is every bit as entertaining as the first. It is a family friendly film that has laughs for everyone and just enough creep to make your little ones snuggle up close in between their giggles.

Enjoy your day of rest!
