31 Days of Horror 2014: Hocus Pocus

31daysheader

The Sanderson Sisters are hung for their crimes of witchcraft after murdering several children in the villages but not before they can do one last spell to ensure their resurrection.

Max (Omri Katz) and his family have just moved to Salem, Massachusetts and he is already having trouble fitting in at school. When he is forced to take his little sister Dani (Thora Birch) trick or treating, they take a visit to the Sanderson house where he lights the Black Flame Candle, rumored to resurrect the sisters from their graves, as a joke. Unfortunately for him, the legends were true and the sisters come back.

In order for the sisters to stay, they must steal the souls of children before sunrise but Max and Dani steal their spell book, leaving the sisters unable to make the necessary potion to do so. Now the sisters have to try and get the book back while Max and Dani do everything in their power to keep the sisters from rising to full power again.

Hocus Pocus is a fun, kid friendly Halloween film filled with witches, zombies, black cats, songs and plenty of laughs.

The Sanderson Sisters consist of Winifred (Bette Midler), Mary (Kathy Najimy) and Sarah (Sarah Jessica Parker). Winifred is the leader of the three and Mary and Sarah are the, let’s say, less intelligent younger sisters who would probably be decent people if they didn’t follow around their smarter, meaner sister out of fear.

Max and Dani are helped out by Thackery Binx (Sean Murray) who was turned into a cat by The Sanderson Sisters when he tried to rescue his sister and the zombie Billy Butcherson (Doug Jones) who is the ex-fiancé of Winifred but was killed for cheating with her sister Sarah.

I remember renting Hocus Pocus for Halloween when I was eight. I must have watched it every single day of the five days we had it. I even put my tape player up to the television to record the song Sarah Sanderson sings to lure the children to their deaths. You might say I was obsessed.

Ever since then, I have watched the movie every Halloween and randomly throughout the year whenever the mood strikes me for some childhood nostalgia. It is now 21 years since its release and I love it just as much as I did on day one.

Enjoy your Sunday Day of Rest with this fun Halloween classic that is safe for your children and humorous enough for the adults.
