Notable Openings This Weekend: John Wick, Ouija

While not a completely underwhelming offering this weekend, this still could be repeat business for Brad Pitt and his trusty tank. We got your generic throw away horror crap-fest trying desperately to get that Halloween money with Ouija, and everybody’s favorite kung-fu student returns with John Wick, a movie that is surprisingly getting pretty good word of mouth. Seriously, when was the last time Keanu Reeves got positive reviews? We’ll try and keep our predictions over 50 mph as we break down this weekend’s box office.

Poster for the movie John Wick.

First off, we got a board game adaptation. Yay. I’ll at least say this for Ouija – the movie is about people playing the actual board game. Take notes, Battleship. I don’t want to see a naval film about fighting robots, or whatever the hell that crap was. I want to see Liam Neeson shout “B13! HIT!” But that’s a story for another day. Otherwise, Ouija looks like your typical “we bought this script at Scares-R-Us” horror movie. It will do fine, but we’ll all forget about it by Sunday Night Football.

Normally I would have tossed John Wick aside, but with the trailer looking real solid, and a slew of strong reviews, this one has a chance to over perform. I get a real Jack Reacher vibe from this movie. And while Jack Reacher wasn’t exactly a box office monster, this could get enough to eke out a #1 finish in a weak box office weekend. Give Keanu a break, come on! Maybe if this does well, Bill and Ted 3 can get fast-tracked. “EXCELLENT!” (cue air guitar solo). Sorry, had to do it.

HOW WILL IT ALL BREAK DOWN…

I’m going to be optimistic and say John Wick (which clearly looks like the better movie over Ouija) pulls off the upset and finishes #1. This should be a tight race though between the two newbies and Fury.

TOP 5 BOX OFFICE PREDICTIONS

1) John Wick — $17 Million
2) Ouija — $16.5 Million
3) Fury — $15 Million
4) Gone Girl — $13 Million
5) The Book of Life — $9.5 Million
