8. D2: The Mighty Ducks (1994)
Speaking of a movie that didn’t need a sequel. Okay, maybe we didn’t need to see the Ducks play in the Junior Goodwill games, but I’m sure as hell glad we did. I’m not sure if this is as good as the original, but it may have the more iconic moments. You get the knucklepuck, which I’m sure drove Pee Wee hockey coaches across the country crazy at the time. They also do a good job of cutting the crappy Ducks. Seriously, did anyone miss Karp, Peter, Tommy, or Tammy? Yeah, didn’t think so. They also hit absolute homeruns with all the new Ducks. You got Julie “The Cat” Gaffney (Colombe Jacobson-Derstine) from Bangor, Maine, Kenny Wu (Justin Wong), Dwayne the cowboy (Ty O’Neal), Luis Mendoza (Mike Vitar) (the speedster who can’t stop), and of course Dean Portman (Aaron Lohr) who starts a bromance with Fulton Reed (Elden Henson) to become the bash brothers. So what if Disney used this movie solely to introduce their own NHL franchise where Team USA changes into Mighty Duck uniforms in the third period championship game against Iceland? It worked on me. I owned a Mighty Ducks jersey. Ugh. Also, Emilio Estevez does a good job in the film, but I’m not sure about some of his coaching decisions. How the hell do you stick with Goldberg (Shaun Weiss) the next game after he gave up 12 goals to Iceland? 12 goals! That’s ridiculous. What the hell was his Goals Against Average?!
