Logan J. Fowler: Way back on the days of the good ol’ Nintendo 64, I remember playing Mario Kart 64. For many years, this held the title of my favorite Mario Kart game ever. Many sequels came since then, and a lot of them were fun, but nothing good top the eight character racing chaos that hit shelves in 1996.
When I got my hands on a Wii U, there was no doubt in my mind that a new chapter in the Mario Kart franchise would be on its way. It released in the form of Mario Kart 8, and the newest entry completely rocked my socks off. It’s absolutely gorgeous for one thing. That being said, the true victory is its creative level design, which has bubbled over into wonderful downloadable tracks. We’ve all been privy to Mario themed courses, but a Legend of Zelda inspired racetrack? That’s just flat out awesome. Pair that with Link on a Hyrule shield motorcycle; now you’re cooking with gas.
While the hover element of the game (you go upside down at points basically) didn’t really change gameplay all that much, the real fun of it is how it changes the landscape. One minute you may be driving normally; the next you are going to a platform up in the sky. Or driving on a wall. Or up a waterfall. It almost takes the races to a theme park level format. It’s awesome!
Also, the new powerups are great, especially the pirahna plant. In addition, music featured within the game is so memorable, I would instantly want to own a CD of the tunes.
Even though Nintendo did deliver the incredible Super Smash Bros. for Wii U this year, it is a close second place. Mario Kart is a clear winner though; with incredible visuals, tight controls, memorable tracks, great music and wonderful downloadble content, this Kart won my heart. Mario Kart 64, I’m sorry, but you have been dethroned.
