Katey Sagal – Gemma Teller, Sons of Anarchy:
To me, this death was absolutely inevitable. Whether you believe that she was the Gertrude archetype from “Hamlet” or not, the woman loved her son and her family but was ultimately too manipulative for her own good and it caught up with her. That aside, her death affected me more than I thought it would. For a woman who set off a large chain reaction of deaths heading into the show’s final season, she sure could make me feel a little (guiltily) sorry for her.
For that, there are two reasons I can truly muster: 1) Kurt Sutter’s writing, and 2) Katey Sagal’s portrayal. Week in and week out, season after season, Sagal delivered powerhouse performances (and garnered her a Golden Globe win in 2011). Gemma loved just as much as she toyed with the lives of those around her, which was a whole lot. As the beloved Sons of Anarchy came to a close, I couldn’t help feel a little sad I wouldn’t see Gemma Teller in particular each week, either, as much as that baffled me.
