BEST DIRECTOR
Daniel Cohen:
Predictions: Clint Eastwood (American Sniper), Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu (Birdman), Richard Linklater (Boyhood), David Fincher (Gone Girl), Wes Anderson (The Grand Budapest Hotel)
Analysis: I talked earlier about Gone Girl being the forgotten film this year, and David Fincher’s exclusion from the DGA is a reflection of that. Having said that though, I still think he gets in. Aside from the occasional Benh Zeitlin (Beasts of the Southern Wild), this category rarely recognizes the newcomer, which is why directors like Damien Chazelle (Whiplash) and Ava DuVernay (Selma) have no chance. I’d love to see Bennett Miller (Foxcatcher) get in, but it doesn’t look good. Eastwood, Inarritu, and Fincher have been around the block, and even though neither of them have ever been nominated for Best Director, both Richard Linklater and Wes Anderson have more than paid their dues.
Bill Bodkin:
Predictions: Clint Eastwood (American Sniper), Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu (Birdman), Richard Linklater (Boyhood), David Fincher (Gone Girl), Bennett Miller (Foxcatcher)
Analysis: This is a tough category to predict, especially since you’ve seen I’ve left Wes Anderson, Ava DuVernay and Mort Tyldum (Imitation Game) off this one. It actually pains me to leave Anderson off this list, but I just see him getting the snub-ski here. However, I think this is going to be Linklater’s to take unless Eastwood makes a huge push at the end.
