Hey Rosetta! at Rockwood Music Hall in New York City
It’s been four years since their last album Seeds, and to celebrate the U.S. release of their new album Second Sight, Hey Rosetta! is touring through the U.S. and Canada this winter. The album was produced by Marcus Paquin (Arcade Fire, Stars, The National) at Montreal’s MixArt Studios. Singer song-writer Tim Baker mentions that he spent a lot of the time writing this record in solitude. The band experimented and pushed their sound on this album. The tone is refined, the music has more layers and is accompanied by deep lyrics that explore different themes, such as seeing the world from a different perspective.
Hey Rosetta! is a seven-piece folk rock band that originated in St. John’s, Newfoundland ten years ago. The band is led by Tim Baker (vocals, keyboards, guitars, percussion) joined by Adam Hogan (guitars, vocals), Josh Ward (bass, keyboards, vocals), Phil Maloney (drums, percussion, vocals), Romesh Thavanathan (keyboards, guitars, cello, vocals), Kinley Dowling (violin, vocals) and Mara Pellerin (vocals, French horn, trumpet). I recently had the opportunity to see all these talented musicians play a sold out show at New York’s Rockwood Music Hall.
It is hard to imagine how all the members of Hey Rosetta! fit onto Rockwood’s compact Stage 2 with their large assortment of instruments. It was quite impressive and a nice treat to see them perform at such an intimate venue. The crowd swayed and clapped along to the anthemic “Harriet” and swooned to Tim’s soothing vocals on the atmospheric “What Arrows.” Their joyous fans cheered “One more song! Two more songs!” as they could not get enough of Hey Rosetta!’s lush arrangements and robust songs.
