10. The Ending To The Matrix Revolutions
You probably think this should be higher, but in all honesty, the ending paid off what they promised in the very first movie. Neo was the one. He freed everyone. The end. The reason this feels so unsatisfying is because of how terrible a job it did to get there, and that’s mostly what we’ll cover on this list. So while it’s infuriating to see the last scene of the whole trilogy be the Architect and Oracle sitting on a park bench with a Kumbaya sunset back drop, it feels worse than it actually is because of the garbage you were forced to sit through.
9. Neo Is Too Damn Powerful
This is the same problem Heroes encountered with Peter Petrelli, and it’s the biggest reason why I never wanted to see a sequel. That last shot of Neo flying away is all you need, but Hollywood is a business, so in the next movie we get Neo kicking ass, and it’s not as cool as you think it’s going to be. What peril is there for this guy? He just runs shit. Watching him kick ass is fun to a certain extent, but how many more kicks and punches do I need to see? And that leads me to the multi-Smith fight in The Matrix Reloaded I’m sorry, this is a cartoon. You think back to how simple and tense that first subway fight was, and to follow it up with this monstrosity really blew bags. I’m sure a lot of work went into that sequence, but it doesn’t make it good. I think I heard a bowling pin sound effect at one point.
Furthermore, I’m someone who can suspend their disbelief a lot in movies, and I rarely complain about this stuff, but I can’t get past the plot hole of Neo not flying away. The fight serves no purpose other than spectacle. Speaking of suspending disbelief, Smith monologues way too much in both movies. Seriously dude, just kill the bastard.
