Tarzan – Mallory Delchamp
For as long as I can remember, I have been a Disney fan. Perhaps it is because I was practically raised on Beauty and the Beast and Robin Hood or maybe I just prefer a romantic story with an Alan Menken soundtrack. Regardless, I am always looking forward to Disney’s next film release. While I am excited about the live adaptation of Beauty and the Beast there are several other animated films that I would absolutely love to see as live action features. My first choice being 1999’s Tarzan.
Tarzan is the 37th film in the Disney Classics collection. Based on the James Rice Burroughs novel, Tarzan of the Apes, the film tells the story of a jungle man and how hjs world changes forever when he meets a young woman. With an unforgettable soundtrack featuring music from Phill Collins and voice over talent including Minnie Driver, Glenn Close and Rosie O’Donnell; Tarzan is pure entertainment.
The film does have its serious moments, however, we see Tarzan’s parents killed in a shipwreck and Tarzan’s enemy, Clayton, does commit suicide. Aside from Hunchback of Notre Dame, I consider Tarzan to be one of Disney’s darker films due to the violence and more adult-like situations. This is also half the reason as to why I would love to see a live-action Tarzan, there is so much to work with!
Tarzan is not just princes and princesses, here we have a story about a man on a turbulent path to self discovery, a star-crossed couple unsure of how to handle their new found love and we could even take it a step further and include animal rights as a prominent theme! Tarzan contains all of the key components needed for a successful film and I am almost certain it would become a hit if it were to actually be made-especially if film makers were to stay true to the original film regarding the soundtrack and storyline.
I personally picture Emma Stone as Tarzan’s lady love, Jane, Chris Hemsworth as Tarzan and Christoph Waltz as Tarzan’s nemesis, Clayton. Now include a few hundred CGI apes, round up the members of Nsync so that may reprise the soundtrack’s, “Trashin’ the Camp” and you have yourself a fun, summer blockbuster! In the meantime I guess I will just settle for the upcoming live-action adaptation of The Jungle Book.
