First Time I Saw It: I remember going on opening night. It was the first PG-13 movie I could officially see as a 13-year-old. I went with a couple of friends and we died laughing. I remember the first time watching Derek Zoolander get onstage and accept Hansel’s award. It was a game changer and we quoted that movie for years to come.
Why I Love It: Zoolander is one of the silliest movies of all time. Stiller, Wilson, and Ferrell all have ample time to act like complete idiots. The direction is excellent and Zoolander flows just like a traditional action movie. So many of the scenes are classic. You have the Freak Gasoline Fight Accident and the Eugoogily early in the film. The Coal Mining detour and the Walk Off comes about halfway through. And the film ends with the magnificent Blue Steel and some good ol’ break dance fighting. Ask yourself this question: Can you look at a scale model without saying (to yourself our out loud) “What is this? A center for ants!” Didn’t think so. Nobody can.
Signature Ferrell Moment: It would be easy to pick any Mugatu line and call it the signature moment. They are all gold. “I feel like I’m taking crazy pills.” “Hansel. So hot right now. Hansel.” Or, all of the times he freaks out and throws coffee on his assistant could be the Ferrellest moment. But I have to say that the Brainwashing sequence holds up as the single funniest part of that movie. Will Ferrell dressing up like Little Cletus and telling Derek a few things about child labor laws made the movie and afterwards all you want to do is KILL THE PRIME MINISTER OF MALAYSIA!
