Asa Butterfield Rumored to Be the New Peter Parker
Strong rumors are coming through that the new (yes, new, again) Spider-Man has been cast.
Ender’s Game actor Asa Butterfield has reportedly been signed to play Peter Parker and his alter ego Spider-Man. Following up on the joint deal between Marvel and Sony allowing the webhead to appear in both the Marvel Cinematic Universe and his own, Butterfield is the third actor to fill in the boots of what is arguably the most popular Marvel character among kids and adults alike.
The actor is also the youngest to be the wallcrawler, playing the closest in age to a high school student (which is exactly what he is going to be in the new movies). Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield were nearing their thirties when they started their respective Spidey film franchises.
Despite from having a severely interesting name, Butterfield’s casting doesn’t really do anything for me. I haven’t seen him in anything, or heard anything really about him. The casting is interesting, because obviously Marvel and Sony both had a hand in it I’m sure, so at least on the Marvel side, I have faith. My faith in Sony at this point is kind of gone, because they have pretty much run the franchise into the ground. Even though I did enjoy Amazing Spider-Man 1 and 2, the only thing really strong about that movie was the characterization of Spidey himself, who I thought was perfectly played by Garfield. However, I never really got the Peter Parker incarnate that I have wanted since 2002 (sorry Maguire, you weren’t anything to write home about). Perhaps Butterfield can bring more to that side of the character.
In his MCU introduction though, how much time will each side of Parker get? Set to appear in Captain America: Civil War, Spidey will websling his way into a movie with a very, very, large cast, seemingly surpassing that of both Avengers movies. Will the balance give way to a good portion Butterfield?
I’m sorry but that name…
Anyway, the young actor (who looks like a poor man’s Elijah Wood) has some pretty sticky shoes to fill (sorry for that interesting image). His arrival onto the scene will probably get a lukewarm response from the devoted MCU viewers at best. Point being, my excitement to see Spidey in the third Cap movie hasn’t really died. However, this casting news has done nothing really to intrigue me. Let’s hope he is the best choice, cause otherwise, what do we as webhead fans have to look forward to anymore when it comes to movies featuring the arachnid adventurer?
