Louis C.K.: Live at the Comedy Store Plot Summary
Louis C.K. delivers a minute comedy routine he developed throughout a year of touring comedy clubs. The comedy special was filmed in the world-famous Comedy Store in Los Angeles.
Louis C.K. is an intelligent comedian. He is capable of making wry observations and loves to say the outrageous things most people barely dare to think. His best material is when he talks about his kids because of his ability to balance dark, and sometimes mean, humor with true love and affection for his daughters.
However, Louis C.K.: Live at the Comedy Store was not the best showcase of Louis C.K. or his comedy. The FX comedy special did not feel completely cohesive. Each time the program came back from commercial, his routine picked up in different spots. If not for Louie’s consistent wardrobe, the special seemed edited from random and different comedy shows. It was weird.
The biggest problem, though, had to be his continuous slip into a lispy valley girl-esque voice that could be a stereotypical gay man or girly female. It was way overused for a bit that was lazy and unfunny. It added nothing to the bit he would break to fall into his, what will hereby be referred to as, “valley gay” character.
I know Louis C.K. is a graphic comedian. His schtick is being gross and crossing the line. Sometimes, it seems, he even wants to piss people off intentionally. However, he had a few too many gratuitous sex stories that just weren’t funny. I am specifically referring to the subway rat sex scene that ended with his pretending to make a rat cum. It was so uncomfortable and horrible. I may be scarred for life.
Through all this negativity though, I did laugh. Any story that had to do with his daughters made me laugh out loud. His reasoning behind kids lying, and why it’s crazy to try to teach your kid not to lie, was one of the best bits of the comedy special.
C.K. is a socially aware person. He imbues his comedy with his personal comments on the state of the world. This comedy special did not fully represent the reach Louis C.K. can have. However, one bit was poignant and laugh out loud funny. It was an almost throwaway line about choosing to raise his kids gay. He tells the audience that they may change or do what they want when they get older, but when they live in his house they will be gay. It was short and quick, but my favorite part of the show.
Louis C.K.: Live at the Comedy Store, was not a bad comedy special but it also wasn’t good. The show followed the model of any other stand up comedy performance, a lot of nonsense for a few true laughs. At the end of the day, Louis C.K. is a talented comedian. His comedy special is not a must see, but it won’t cause you to burst into flames if you watch it and die hard Louie fans will probably strongly disagree with my lukewarm review.
