I’m Ready for Season 9, I Mean the Movie by Ryan DeMarco
On June 3rd, Vinny Chase and his group return to the screen, only this time it won’t be in our living rooms. The once hugely popular HBO series Entourage, hits theaters across the country four years after the series ended in 2011. It will be called, you guess it, Entourage.
As a fan of the series while it was on television, I have been eager to see how well the show would transition to the big screen. Of course it will not be the first to do so, as Sex and the City has made films since that show ended, and in my opinion that’s two films too many. The hit series 24 has been revived a number of times as well by making limited runs after the original series ended. It has become a trend now, which is fine if the audience makes a high enough demand (please don’t ask for Sex and the City 3, people). When Entourage the series wrapped up their were rumblings of a feature film being made in the future so when it was announced last year that it was actually happening, it was less of a shock to the audience. There was still a demand for the characters and their stories, and perhaps a little more justice after that final episode.
Let’s face it, during the show’s eight season run, nothing could match the greatness that was season three of the show. The pacing, the character arc’s, and just the overall great moments that occurred made the show a must watch event. As the show progressed, as most other shows, it began to lose momentum and the stories began to get stretched out in the final few seasons. Great moments became few and far between and it seemed like the writers were out of ideas to tell. Then the last season happened and it was a less than mediocre way to say goodbye to a beloved program. Given just eight episodes, the show began delving into weird territory and just threading together plot points that seemed so ungenuine while the key players were just doing things out of character. While people were left with a sour taste from the finale, the film was promised, but would fans come out to see what’s become of Hollywood heart stopper Vinny Chase and his boys?
I like the idea of an Entourage film, or as I like to call it season nine. It gives this great show a second chance to rekindle that flame and make a great impression. When the show began it was certainly a different time in Hollywood and now over a decade later our group of guys have to find out if they can keep up with the times or if they’re yesterday’s news. If the show had wrapped up more sucsessfully I would combat the idea of making a film, but at this point there isn’t much to lose. After four years I would imagine there’s a lot to tell with all of these characters. I’m looking forward to seeing that.
Of all the characters that ran around on the show, my favorite character was Drama, hands down. Johnny Drama, the older brother of Vinny, always made any scene he was in worthwhile. His out of line comments and just over confident banter was always a stand out element that kept his character fresh and funny. He was never naggy or just annoying (cough, cough, E).
On June 3, Vinny Chase and his group of broad banging boys return and I’m already on line to see them.
