Pop-Break Live: Gogol Bordello, Flogging Molly and Mariachi El Bronx at The Stone Pony Summer Stage in Asbury Park, NJ
Keep Asbury weird.
That’s the mantra that locals, artists and creatives (and local artists and creatives) have tattooed on their souls. Asbury Park has always been a bastion of wild creativity and artistic expression. And could there be a better way of reflecting this than having three of the wildest and most creative bands out there coming in to headline the famed Stone Pony Summer Stage?
Pop-Break’s Jeff Crespi caught the bands in action.
Mariachi El Bronx
These guys look familiar? Of course they do, they’re The Bronx – the amazingly bad ass punk band out of New York City. What are they doing dressed like Antonio Banderas in Desperado? Well, it’s their ‘acoustic’ outfit – Mariachi El Bronx. Instead of just stripping their songs down to acoustic versions or writing songs that would sound great in a coffee house, the band decided to go full mariachi. The sound is absolutely insane, and kicked the night off perfectly.
Flogging Molly
One of the most amazing bands in music today, Flogging Molly was up next. The purveyors of the sweet science that is pub punk brought their high-energy, and socially conscious set to Asbury. The band, as always, deliver a pint-in-the air performance that made us all miss Saint Patrick’s Day.
Gogol Bordello
In keeping with the whole, ‘let’s be creative and wild’ theme, Gogol Bordello took the stage. The boozy set of gypsy punk with flares of a cabaret style enthralled the crowd.
