Pre-Trailer Thoughts: I actually enjoyed the first Hotel Transylvania quite a bit. Despite Sandler and James being movie death to many films, there they hid behind the most infamous movie monsters. Was a sequel necessary? No, but nevertheless, here we are.-LJF
Pre-Trailer Thoughts: I haven’t seen the first Hotel Transylvania, but from word of mouth I’ve heard that future generations will consider it a Halloween classic. It also is clearly one of the few movies Adam Sandler has starred in in the past decade that gotten above average reviews. These successes are definitely thanks to the first film’s director Genndy Tartakovsky (creator of Dexter’s Lab and Samurai Jack), who thankfully is returning to direct this sequel as well. – JTM
Rate the Trailer: 3 out of 5. The trailer isn’t bad. I chuckled a bit. And look, you can’t deny the amazing voice cast behind all the creatures that go bump in the night. I didn’t even list them all above for the sake of space! Anyway, the movie looks to have a lot of visual gags, which is fine. This is a kids’ movie, pure and true. However, let’s hope the adults can enjoy it as well. That’s kind of hard to predict right now.-LJF
Rate the Trailer: 3 out of 5. I feel like the presence of Sandler and most of his usual crew is still slightly off-putting (especially after the obnoxious Pixels from earlier this summer). But Tartakovsky’s directing and animating is fantastic, with a very bouncy and fast-paced style that goes well with the varied character designs and use of vibrant colors. His animation also fits well with the heavy amount of slapstick that is evident in the trailer. Cameo like Mel Brooks as Dracula’s father along with Nick Offerman and Megan Mullally as the parents of Andy Samberg’s character looks fun as well. – JTM
Theater, Rent, No Thanks, Undecided. Undecided. I wouldn’t be opposed to seeing this in the theater; my girlfriend loved the original so the push might be there. However, I can easily wait for this come rental time. There are much better movies to watch leading up to Halloween that are meant for the kid in all of us. Hotel Transylvania 2 looks fun, but I can wait to see it without regret.
Theater, Rent, Undecided, No Thank? Rent. While I don’t feel like I need to go out to the theater for this movie, it definitely is something I’d like to catch on streaming in a few years along with the first film. Both seem like they would be perfect for Halloween movie marathons, especially if younger kids will be watching.- JTM
