In 2009, Zack Snyder shocked critics with a masterful retelling of Alan Moore’s acclaimed 12 issue comic book series Watchmen. Backed by Warner Bros, Snyder was able to bring this story, full of interconnected and referential storylines, to life. Though critics loved the film, Watchmen did not do as well at the box office. Some believe Watchmen would have done better as a serial television show due to the sheer amount of interdependent story.
According to Collider, Zack Snyder has been meeting with HBO in regards to a Watchmen series. Though it is known they are in talks about adapting the DC Comics property, no other information is apparent at this point.
HBO has a rocky history when it comes to predicting new shows. Until there is a hard set date, there are no guarantees even with popularity or a star studded cast. However, pulling in favor of the new Snyder created series will be the loss of Game of Thrones in a few years time and the short supply of current original drama series.
As of yet, there are no details determining whether this would be a prequel series, a sequel series, or a remaking of the original Watchmen events. A prequel series would be the most interesting at this point. The eight character-centric limited series and one one shot, Before Watchmen, released in 2012 was a prequel to Moore’s 1986 comic. It gave insight and background into the original world of Watchmen.
However, the only solid fact we have is that Zack Snyder has had meetings with HBO about a Watchmen series.
