Bustin’ Makes Us Feel Good: Our Final Thoughts Going Into Ghostbusters

Angelo Gingerelli’s Take:

I love Ghostbusters.  I really like Ghostbusters 2.  I like the cartoon, video games and most of the songs from both movies.  To put my Ghostbusters fandom in perspective, I made my own proton pack because I needed to play with one before the toy version was released.

I want this to be good soooo bad.  I would be interested in this under any circumstances, but as the father of a one-year-old girl, I think it would be awesome for her to have her own female version of something I loved when I was young to call her own.  The best case scenario is in a few years we’re arguing over who’s better, Bill Murray or Kristen Wiig?  The worst is the movie is so bad we all forget about it by the time she’s going to kindergarten.

I don’t think we “needed” another Ghostbusters.  The first movie is perfect, the second is solid, the cartoon was good for the era and the 2009 console game was a cool extension of the characters and story.  However, while most sequels are not necessary, it’s been twenty-seven years since the last movie, and I’m kind of curious about what’s going on in that universe.

While it’s clear the internet and general public is not looking forward to this version of Ghostbusters, I’m not sure what other direction they could have gone.  With nearly thirty years passing since Ghostbusters 2 at least some of the main actors were not interested in reprising their roles, so instead of casting young actors to play the classic roles they went with female leads and changed the overall dynamic.  Personally, I’m way more interested in seeing a new team fight ghosts in NYC than Zac Effron playing Egon Spangler, or Jonah Hill playing Ray Stantz.

While I want it to succeed and bring Ghostbusters back to the forefront of pop culture like it was in the 80’s, I think the general tide of public opinion has turned so far against this movie that it will not have a strong opening.

Hot Take – It will bomb in theaters, but have a strong following on DVD/On-Demand in the future and become a cult favorite.

  1. I was not a fan of the first two trailers, but I have to say the trailers that have played on TV for the past month or two have really changed my mind about this movie. Checking it out on Saturday, hoping it’s going to be awesome.
