Robert Downey Jr., True Detective’s Nic Pizzolatto Planning HBO Series
RDJ may be trading up the iron suit for something a little more professional.
Variety has reported True Detective creator Nic Pizzolatto and Robert Downey Jr. are in talks with HBO for a new drama project. Plot details are scarce as Downey Jr., Pizzolatto, and HBO have declined any official comment. Sources suggest the project may be a series instead of a standalone TV movie, but the project has been in discussion as early as May this year.
Despite the scarcity of details, the project is speculated to be related to Downey Jr.’s own Perry Mason reboot, which has been in development at Warner Bros. The Avengers star has had his heart set on a modern adaptation of the classic ‘50s courtroom drama for some time now, pitching the idea back in 2011. Unfortunately, due to the mixed box office reception of RDJ’s preceding courtroom film, The Judge, it lost its footing.
The third season of True Detective is still up in the air, but a potential series with a high-profile actor is just what HBO needs to keep ahold of Pizzolatto. The project would have exciting implications for Downey Jr. as well. Not only would it mark it as substantial start in television for the actor but also as a producer.
