Do, or Do Not: The Star Wars Spin-Off Movies We Want To See

I Am Boba Fett: A Star Wars Story (Aaron Sarnecky)

In the realm of unnecessary things, Star Wars spinoffs rank pretty high. Of course, the same can be said of the prequel and sequel trilogies. But since they’re not going away, we might as well have some fun postulating which subjects Lucasfilm could and should use for a spinoff.

There are some things in my mind that shouldn’t be touched. I’m not crazy about a young Han Solo movie, or Yoda origin movie. But if we must have spinoffs, I’d like to see one focusing on the galaxy’s greatest bounty hunter, Boba Fett. Boba Fett became much more popular than George Lucas expected when he was introduced in the Star Wars Holiday Special and when he made his film debut in The Empire Strikes Back. He’s just a side character but he remains a fan favorite. We did get him in Attack of the Clones, and apparently showed up in The Clone Wars cartoon. If he’s going to be famous though, it should be more than because his armor looks cool. As much as I love Return of the Jedi, Boba Fett’s defeat, much like his father’s, was not satisfying.

Readers of the Expanded Universe, now called Legends, would always tell you Fett escaped the Sarlacc, but we deserve something official now that that’s been shelved. It could be about a bounty he takes between Episode VI and Episode VII, maybe partially on Nar Shadaa, “The Smuggler’s Moon,” or in the criminal underworld of Coruscant. And let’s have people keep saying to Boba that they heard he was dead, like Snake Plissken in Escape from New York.

I don’t have too many ideas about the cast. Jimmy Smits is reprising his role of Bail Organa in Rogue One, so Temuera Morrison can return as well. Although at his age, someone would do all his stunts. Good thing for the helmet. Director-wise, I wouldn’t mind seeing Gareth Edwards again if Rogue One is good. If Lucasfilm really wanted it to be different though, they could hand the reigns to an action-focused director, such as the Wachowskis. But if it were the Wachowskis, I’d keep them away from the script, or attach another person. As for tone, Star Wars transcends all ages but kids have always been a big part of its core demographic. Boba Fett is not so much a villain as an amoral gun-for-hire, so as dark as Empire would be your best bet.

Put all those elements together and you should have a decent movie, at the very least.
