Do, or Do Not: The Star Wars Spin-Off Movies We Want To See

Starkiller: A Star Wars Story (Matthew Kelly)

By now, we more or less know the story of the Death Star. Palpatine seizes control of the Senate, consolidates power, finds a young Governor who can oversee the project (Tarkin), and builds a super weapon. There are some gaps that Rogue One will surely fill, related to how it works, but that pretty much sums it up.

But when
The Force Awakens introduced a new Death Star called Starkiller Base, they didn’t really go into detail. It’s pretty unclear who the First Order even is, or how they came to be (I assume without reading the books). And while the vagueness of the new villains may add to their mystique, it does raise one very important question:
How on Yoda’s White Hoth could anyone get authorization to build a THIRD Death Star?

Building a Death Star is a massive undertaking. There are these humongous construction projects that take an incredible amount of resources and always end up exploding before they can really get the job done. Sure, the original Death Star destroyed Alderaan, but besides that initial demonstration, it failed in a big way. I highly doubt the Death Star was planned as a one off. And then the second Death Star never got to destroy anything. It was just another cool sideways space explosion and a ton of credits down the drain.

That leads me to believe one of two things is true: Either everyone in the galaxy got some sort of collective force amnesia,
which caused them to forget the events of the original trilogy, or General Hux is secretly amazing. I want to see option two on the big screen.

Hux got short changed in The Force Awakens. He shared a couple of scenes where Ren basically made him look like Salacious Crumb, and then his team lost the big game. Now, he did escape, so there is a good chance we will see more of him in Episode VIII and maybe they will tell his story, but I doubt it. That film will be too stuffed with new characters, and way too busy revealing pieces of Rey and Kylo’s backstory to focus on Mr Weasley.

So let’s give Hux his own spin-off. I want to see who he had to convince that Starkiller Base wouldn’t become just
another fantastic explosion. I want to see where he got the materials. I want to figure out what The First Order actually wants. I want some context! Starkiller pulling back the evil curtain could make The Force Awakens a better movie.

If
Rogue One is as good as everyone says it is, Disney will have a problem: there is no logical sequel. Many Bothans died getting the second Death Star plans, but who cares about Bothans anyway? Plus, it turned out that the Emperor just gave the plans to the Rebellion anyway as part of a terrible trap. Let’s make the Rogue One sequel an origin story of General Hux, and more importantly Starkiller Base.

That, or
more Dexter Jettster. It’s your call, Disney.
