To borrow a turn of phrase from the Mighty Thor, Odin’s beard!
The first trailer for Avengers: Infinity War is here, and the video is nothing short of glorious. Like a child completely dumping out his or her toy chest on the floor to stage the biggest battle imaginable, the trailer throws everything into the mix and pushes the boundaries of scale and imagination to the breaking point. That is, if you’re talking about the child with the greatest toy chest in the world.
Even though there’s so much going on in the nearly two-and-a-half minute video, the trailer manages to reveal both so much and so little about the film. In my opinion, trying to make predictions or in-depth analyses of the footage is somewhat futile; there are certainly clues to be found, but I’d rather soak up the sheer electricity generated by this trailer.
Even our resident MCU skeptic, film editor Dan Cohen, might have to admit that it’s impossible to watch this trailer without experiencing a sense of anticipation and awe. [Editor’s Note: Our film editor has given positive reviews for the X-Men films, and both Guardians films]
The entire Marvel Cinematic Universe has been leading up to this movie since Marvel’s The Avengers all the way back in 2012, and our patience is finally going to be rewarded next year. For now, our first look at Infinity War is an absolutely mouth-watering appetizer.
The MCU has radically changed since the first Avengers film, and this new trailer cleverly highlights that fact with its initial voiceover. All of the new settings, new team ups, and new looks (Cap’s beard may have broken the internet) illustrate how far we’ve come and reinforce the notion that third Avengers film will be unlike anything we’ve seen before. On top of that, the scale and scope promise that the movie will be appropriately epic given how much build up this conflict has received. As astronomically high as fan expectations are after all this time, this sneak peek at Thanos’s long awaited battle with Earth’s Mightiest Heroes suggests that their faith will be handsomely rewarded.
