Last Minute Last Jedi Theories

Last Jedi Title Card

Star Wars: The Last Jedi hits theaters this week, and to say we’re excited is an understatement. Fueling this excitement is the vagueness of the trailers, and the press coming forth. So the staff got together to share their last minute predictions about the forthcoming Star Wars film.

The Force Ghost Trio Returns (Daryn Kirscht)

There is a lot to be excited about with The Last Jedi, but one aspect I am really looking forward to is the possibility of the film bringing together the original trilogy and the prequel trilogy. I know most don’t like the prequels (I’m not a huge fan of them myself since I’m no longer a kid), but there are parts to them that I still enjoy.

Plus, the idea of bringing the entire Star Wars canon together into one, cohesive universe is an exciting prospect. The best way I can see fit to bring that idea to life is my ultimate theory: Master Yoda, Obi-Wan Kenobi, and none other than Anakin Skywalker will appear as force ghosts in The Last Jedi. It may sound like an odd plot point on the surface, but a deeper dive sees this theory as likely in some fashion.

The first bit of evidence to support this theory is a look back at The Force Awakens. In Rey’s “dream sequence” (once she touches the lightsaber), there are voiceovers from Frank Oz’s Yoda, Ewan McGregor’s Obi-Wan (from the prequels) and Alec Guinness’s Obi-Wan (from the original trilogy). Could it simply be a nod to the movies from the past? Sure, but I don’t believe that for a second. Frank Oz and Ewan McGregor were brought into the recording studio for a reason, and that, in my opinion, is to set up the rest of this new trilogy – much like the rest of The Force Awakens accomplishes.

To add to that idea, there were many whispers and multiple reports, including one from Mike Zeroh, of Frank Oz and Ewan McGregor returning to Pinewood Studios during the production of The Last Jedi. Why would they be on the set of the movie if they weren’t going to be in it? Where there is smoke there is usually fire, and there is definitely some smoke here. Do you know who else was rumored to be at Pinewood Studios during filming? Hayden Christensen.

The actor has been shunned from Star Wars fans for years after his portrayal of Anakin Skywalker ended in Revenge of the Sith. However, he was at Star Wars Celebration this past spring and was met with a roaring applause from the audience. Again, why would Disney and Lucasfilm suddenly bring him back after 10+ years away from the franchise (especially since he has been relatively quiet in the business for years)?

In addition, there were more whispers and hints from those close to Christensen that claimed he was working out and building muscle before and during. If I didn’t know any better, it would almost seem like he is attempting to get back into his Jedi frame. If Christensen does indeed appear, it would be his opportunity for redemption.

Let’s also not pretend that force ghosts aren’t a normal part of Star Wars. Not only did Alec Guinness portray a force ghost in multiple films in the original trilogy, but the end of Return of the Jedi sees not only the trio of Yoda, Obi-Wan and Anakin, but George Lucas replacing the older Anakin Skywalker (Sebastian Shaw) with Christensen, which means he is no stranger to adding in and tweaking force ghosts. The prequels even mentioned that Qui-Gon Jinn (Liam Neeson) would become a force ghost. Speaking of tying in the former trilogies with the new one, maybe Obi-Wan has a more important role in Rey’s life than expected. Maybe the trio of force ghosts need to appear help Rey learn how to use the force, or even help Luke train Rey to become a Jedi. The possibilities are almost endless.

There are probably way better theories out there that have much more evidence than this one since this theory is based on speculation and rumors, but there is simply just too much coincidence to ignore. Force ghosts are a part of Star Wars mythology no matter what way we look at it. It’s time to embrace it and bring this franchise to cohesion.

Plus, come on, it would be awesome.

Benicio Del Toro Will be Boba Fett (Daniel Cohen)

I’ve had this theory for a while, and have wanted to write about it, but in seeing the very early twitter reaction to the film, I am wavering a little bit.  With the reaction praising the seemingly original creativity, the idea of a fan favorite forced cameo doesn’t seem to mesh with what Rian Johnson is going for.  Having said that, I’m going to stick with it.  The Benicio Del Toro casting has been the biggest after thought to this entire movie.  You don’t cast Benicio Del Toro for some throwaway cameo.

Why do I think Del Toro is Boba Fett?  The casting is just too perfect.  The idea of Benicio Del Toro as Boba Fett is so damn cool, and this is a character who desperately needs an infusion of coolness.  When Boba Fett first appeared in The Empire Strikes Back he was like the Fonzie of Star Wars.  He out smarts Han Solo.  He talks back to Darth Vader.  He has a jet pack!  He was the epitome of a total bad ass.

Then what happened?  George Lucas took a giant dump on the entire character.  He’s some lame unaltered clone or whatever?  I don’t know.  Who cares anymore.  It’s one of the biggest crimes the prequel trilogy committed.  What made Boba Fett so great was his mystique.  The prequels ripped that away like a four-year-old who drops his ice cream on the pavement.  Gone.

Lucas took it one step further when he replaced his awesome voice with Temuera Morrison in the revised DVD’s.  Not only is Temuera Morrison a mediocre actor, but really listen to the way he delivers Boba Fett’s classic lines.  He’s not even trying!  Awful.

There’s only one man who can save Boba Fett – Benicio Del Toro.  It would be beyond cool to see Fett come in, take off his mask, and it’s Benicio Del Toro, baby!

Even though it would feel fan servicey to bring Fett back, I have full confidence Rian Johnson wouldn’t just be doing it for the fans.  If Boba Fett is in this movie, it’s because Rian Johnson felt there was a place for him in the story.

Finn is Actually the Chosen One (Rachel Freeman)

Look, we all love Rey. She’s a badass, and she’s clearly very strong, but strength does not equal the hero. Look at Kylo Ren. He is incredibly powerful, and yet he went to the dark side because the dark side makes promises, but once you’ve turned those promises and the reasons for them don’t matter anymore. Rey may have found Luke, but she has never known her parents, and the first “parental” figured she had was murdered right in front of her. She was powerless to save him. If she carries these feelings of loss and desperation in her, then her chances of being swayed to the dark dramatically increase.

Finn, however, started on the dark side. He was a Stormtrooper who broke free of his own accord. Finn wasn’t swayed by someone to the light. He already felt that in what he was doing, and the side he was on was wrong. Honestly, I feel like Finn did a lot more work than Rey too. Even though he isn’t a Jedi (supposedly), he used the lightsaber pretty damn well for someone who has never seen one before. While Rey seems to be running away, its Finn who runs forward and pulls Rey with him. Also, if you’re paying attention to the cover of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Rey is more so colored by red like Kylo Ren, while Finn is blue.

With all that being said, and what little we have seen in the trailer, it looks like Luke is afraid of something in Rey and we see Kylo Ren hold his hand out to her. I don’t know for sure if she’ll be totally taken in by the dark side, but I do think she’s going to lose her way. This means Finn is going to have to keep stepping up, keep pushing himself, and perhaps that will awaken something in him he didn’t know was there. There must be balance in the Force. Rey is filled with anger, which leaves Finn as our symbol of hope.

Porgs will be the New Ewoks (Bill Bodkin)

I have literally no idea how these adorable penguin dog hybrids even fit into this scenario, but man do I have this aching feeling that they’re going to be as ever-present, and as illogically vital to the plot of The Last Jedi as the Ewoks were to Return of the Jedi.

My theory behind this comes not from the Porg cameo in the trailer, but there non-stop, ever-present marketing. You turn around anywhere and there these characters are. A character that is in 10 seconds (or less) of a trailer is being marketed at every corner. To me that means this character has a major impact, and/or presence in The Last Jedi.

While I don’t think they’ll be as infuriating as the last big new Star Wars character marketed to kids (the abomination that was Jar Jar Binks), the Porgs do remind me of the Ewoks. They’re cuddly, kid friendly aliens that make for great toys, and marketing material. Don’t be surprised if somehow, hopefully cleverly, these dog/penguin hybrids will be integral in at least one major storyline.
