Review: Harley Quinn #33

In issue #32 we saw Harley exact revenge on DePerto and Berkowitz. Her revenge was very fitting of a man that terrorized her for months then killed Mason. Berkowitz had tried multiple times to have Harley killed and was working with DePerto the entire time. Both parties involved had what was coming to them. Now that Mason is gone how will Harley Quinn and Madame Macabre deal with this loss?

This issue picks up with the crew laying Mason to rest. Everyone is by Mason’s grave talking about how they can barely believe he is gone. It’s seeming like no one is really sure on what they will do next. Harley and Madame Macabre take a moment to reflect together while everyone else leaves them alone to do so. As everyone is parting ways Harley and Poison Ivy have a touching moment. Ivy reaffirms that she is there for Harley as always, but Harley feels like she just needs to be on her own for now.

The ladies leave the graveyard and Eggy drives Madame Macabre and Harley to a local restaurant. Tony preps for the incoming hurricane while the ladies eat. After their meal the ladies head to the Freakshow/museum that Madame Macabre and Mason owned together. Here we learn that Madame M is leaving town and has asked Harley to inform everyone else. She also asks Harley to take care of the museum in her absence. Of course Harley obliges.

Later on Harley decides to have a little fun and move all her babies to safety in true Harley fashion. I will let you see for yourself how she goes about this. But, spoiler not spoiler, it’s pretty hilarious and somewhat weird yet adorable. The animal cuddles don’t last long, Harley restlessly goes outside to check out the status of the hurricane. It doesn’t take long for her to see one of her friends braving the ocean for some pre-storm surfing. After a short discussion Harley decides to join her gang of Harley’s back at the roller derby.

A much needed distraction as Harley takes on a new opponent. It looks like all her team mates have fell victim to this opponent. They warn Harley that she seems to hypnotize them somehow. That she’s just so beautiful they can’t take her eyes off her. Can Harley successfully take her down without getting caught up in the same trap?

I wanted to leave some action open for the reader so you can see for yourself how the roller derby plays out. I will let you know that this tale ends with Harley and Ivy taking a road trip with other friends to Florida. I say girl deserves a vacation after all the hell she’s been through. This issue was interesting because it was nice to see what Harley does when she’s not being threatened by assassins, and other outside insanity for that matter. It’s unfortunate that this down-time is a result of Mason’s death.

Issue 33 was still a fun read even though there’s still sadness.
