“All the Comforts of Home” Plot Summary:
The authorities hunt S.H.I.E.L.D. as Coulson (Clark Gregg) and the gang begin their mission to change the future.
Although it’s only been about a month since I last reviewed Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., it feels a lot longer. While I didn’t forget any big details, it’s a good thing most shows include recaps. In case you’ve forgotten, the team successfully rebuilt the monolith, which sent them back in team. Unfortunately, the world is still out to get S.H.I.E.L.D. for crimes Aida framed them for.
This episode devotes much of its time to General Hale (Catherine Dent), who you may remember interrogated Fitz (Iain De Caestecker) earlier this season. While it seemed like her objective was simply to capture our heroes, her motives are less clear now. She apparently wants to kill the agents or stop them from accomplishing their mission. And she’s going to use her daughter/assassin Ruby (Dove Cameron) to do so. I have to give Catherine Dent credit for initially selling me on General Hale as a normal member of the military doing her job.
While some viewers were probably suspicious of General Hale from the get-go, I doubt many predicted that Deke (Jeff Ward) was alive and on present-day Earth. You’ve got to be happy for him, knowing what he’s been through his whole life, and his misadventures are mildly amusing. However, I’m unconvinced that he has anything worthwhile to bring to this storyline. His death would’ve nicely wrapped up his character arc.
Outside a random but welcome Patrick Warburton cameo, what elevates “All the Comforts of Home” from a slightly above average episode to a truly memorable episode is Yo-Yo (Natalia Cordova-Buckely) losing her arms. This moment is generally shocking, though we saw that future Yo-Yo was missing her arms. Still, no doubt pretty much everyone assumed she lost her arms in some cruel experiment. Fortunately, Yo-Yo should be able to get robotic arms. However, robot arms or not, this might mean the end of the world is already in motion.
Next week is the 100th episode of Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., something I doubted we would every get. And while that should get us feeling very hopeful and optimistic, we should all have a foreboding feeling after this week’s episode.
