Review: Eternity Girl #2

Spoilers from Issue #1 will be in this review. You have been warned.

At the end of issue #1 Caroline was approached by Madame Atom and given an offer to die. Caroline has tried multiple times to die and Madame Atom has her convinced that she actually died years ago when they faced each other. Caroline thought she had saved the world when she defeated Madame Atom, but she learned that they are both wave functions, signals. Because of this neither one of them truly died that day.

Madame Atom also has Caroline convinced that she can die if she simply destroys the world. Easy enough, right? I can imagine that ending the universe and time as we know it will fix everything. But, what do I know? Issue #2 begins with Caroline trying to reach out to her former boss. He told her she was still unstable and not ready to return to work. Some things she did previously at work are why she’s seeing a therapist if you recall.

Another issue Caroline is having, she can’t seem to hold onto any physical forms lately. She’s really been beating herself up over it because that’s what she’s known for; Shapeshifting. Her friend Dani decides to take her mind off things by having a night out to watch a comedian. Ironically enough, the comedian is telling jokes about her body type and body image. Caroline seems happy to be with Dani, but she’s not entirely focused on the act.

Caroline is also being visited by Madame Atom. Her nemesis really likes to show up at the most inopportune times to explain how to cease Caroline’s existence. Once Caroline snaps back to the reality that exists with Dani her mood on the comedian changes. She went from thanking Dani for taking her out, to being angry because of the content the comedian used. And, to make matters worse she’s losing grip on her human form.

As a result Dani says some pretty terrible things to Caroline that she doesn’t mean to out of frustration. This results in Caroline leaving the comedy club and getting a taxi to Long Island. All while this is going on she’s also on another plane of existence fighting a huge guardian creature. Her goal is to destroy things that keep her from her current path, and on this plane of existence she’s out for her old boss at Alpha 13, Sloan.

Caroline was a superhero, she saved the planet. But, did she really “die” years ago when she fought Madame Atom? She hasn’t felt the same ever since, and being away from work because of a misuse of her powers is really eating at her. She really seems to need purpose, but currently has none. Will she finally snap and kill everyone to end her misery? Obviously pick up this issue to learn how Caroline and Madame Atom will have to go about ending the universe. I also didn’t explain more about Caroline’s wave function ability.

Readers I highly recommend picking up this issue to experience all of these things first-hand. And, I am really digging this superhero story. Eternity Girl is one of the most human superheroes in comics today because of her emotions in dealing with once being famed and in the limelight. Could you imagine being one of the strongest beings in the universe and not being able to use your powers for anything? This story is a brilliant take on being powerful, but feeling powerless. I can’t wait to see what unfolds in issue #3.

Rating: 9/10
