Spoilers from Issue #2 will be reveled in this review to bring you up to speed. Don’t read this review if you haven’t read issue 2.
At the end of issue #2 Luna and Val were travelling the world together. Luna was trying to find friends to corroborate his story. But, mummy ninjas had killed nearly everyone. After a scene at a loved one’s funeral the two ended up getting kicked out. And, we found out the family was actually mummy ninja’s in disguise.
As Val and Luna fled he ended up running into some old friends. A cult, er I mean, religion he seems to have founded in the 70’s. His members are nudists and still hold firmly onto the belief of free love. These people are members of the Church of Luna. Even though Luna left years ago the church lives on. On a party train. Legit a train that has a party on it.
A lady named Sugarberry has taken over the Church of Luna. Once the train arrives at its destination Luna and Val are given the grand tour. Large statues depicting Luna are all over the grounds here. Val is way happy about all the adventure’s they’ve had and is relieved that the book won’t be all gloom and doom after seeing this beautiful place.
I’m sure you’ve gathered the overall tone of this tale already. As soon as things look up, they get grim again. It’s a part of that amazingly dark humor that I love from this series. Well, just as Val and Luna are feeling happy and at ease, something really dark happens. We find out what the cult, er church, really wants with Luna.
Well, obviously I can’t reveal what the cult really wants. Yea, I’m not even fixing it. Leaving it at cult. They throw Luna and Val into a medieval style dungeon. Here we get to see Val get really inventive on hatching up an escape plan. It’s great to see her personality shine through in all of this ridiculousness.
Things don’t work out for Val, and soon the cult members have Luna and Val tied up. To make matters worse mummy ninjas burst onto the scene. Will anyone survive?
As usual, the writing is filled with hilarious dark humor. The artwork conveys a hilarious and gruesome story as well. And, the character development? Off the charts. Even though Luna is this well- traveled adventurer it really seems like he’s learning a lot from Val.
Of course Val is learning a lot from Luna as well. In this issue she really took control. It’s great to see her break out of her shell. It’s clear she’s not longer just spectating life. She is living. I can’t wait to see what develops next.
