Review: Xena Warrior Princess #3

So far we have learned that Xena was once involved in some shady undertakings. It’s clear that Xena feels guilt for her past transgressions. She has asked the Goddess to put her on a path to redemption. And, that path has led Xena to Gabrielle. This issue begins with Gabrielle checking out the marketplace in Athens.

Gabrielle is like a kid in a candy store taking in all the sights. Well, until a kid snatches her coin. Luckily she’s a pretty fast runner. As she’s catching up to the kid she notices a crowd at a temple. In the middle of the crowd are a ton of guards, and Xena. Gabrielle wastes no time to be by Xena’s side and seems to have a plan.

Without any hesitation she runs in front of the guards ‘Lila!’ Xena and the guards stop and look confused. Gabrielle goes on to tell the guard that Xena is her sister Lila, and that she’s not right in the head. Gabrielle does a fantastic job of really making this hilarious story believable. Xena just stands there in silence, and shock. Somehow this dramatic play Gabrielle makes up works.

The ladies head off to speak alone. Xena is clearly humiliated, but happy that Gabrielle’s amazing act worked. Gabrielle asks Xena to travel together again. If you recall Xena called her a fool. Now Xena realizes that even if she isn’t the leader of her former group that Jax will just take over. So, she tells Gabrielle they can travel together, but that she must sit still until she returns. She doesn’t want to risk getting Gabrielle killed as she confronts Jax.

Gabrielle actually listens to Xena and sits there for what appears to be quite some time. She must really want to travel with Xena. Unfortunately a familiar face notices her there, and things go south quickly. Pick up this issue to learn the exciting conclusion. Also, pick up this issue because it’s hilarious.

If Gabrielle were a character in D&D her charisma and diplomacy would be off the charts. I always loved them travelling together because Xena is very cold. Gabrielle is very warm and plays her warmth to her advantage. Likewise Xena’s coldness helps in many ways on their adventures. Xena is not a people-person at all. She doesn’t know how to relate to others, but Gabrielle does. And, she uses this to help them constantly.

I’m so happy to see that the characters are being portrayed in this fashion. This issue was full of adventure and laughs.
