Review: Harley Loves Joker #1

It’s finally here! The two issue mini-series Harley Loves Joker written by one of the original creators, Paul Dini. This issue is illustrated by Bret Blevins and is published by DC Comics.

I should mention that this story does tie into to and continue the previous series, Harley Loves Joker that ran from issues 17-26 of Harley Quinn Rebirth. But, a handy re-cap helps to fill in those gaps. So it’s not necessary to go back and read those. But let’s be real you should totally read them because they were cute and fun. I will have to explain spoilers from those issues, so if you haven’t read them and would like to hold off on reading this review.

Harley Loves Joker #1

Issue #1 starts off with the entire family reunited. Harley wakes up in bed beside the Joker, and her fur babies Bud and Lou are there too. If you recall there was some new baddie hitting up all of the Joker’s haunts. The Joker was having a hard time with that, and to make matters worse Harley sorta tipped off where their headquarters was. So she was stressing out trying to surprise the Joker with a new HQ.

If you recall Harley hired Jenna from the Wonderland Gang to fix up an old store she found. Jenna worked like mad to make everything exactly to Harley’s design. And, of course Jenna wants paid for her amazing construction work. A reasonable 3 million. Jenna told Harley she has 5 days to pay her. If Harley doesn’t pay, the whole place gets blown up. But, Harley has a brilliant idea on how to make the money to keep their amazing new HQ.

After Harley does her best to get the money to Jenna we meet back up with The Joker and The Penguin. They’ve created a plan to catch the thief that’s been stealing all of The Joker’s jobs. Here’s where we learn a lot about the new nemesis of Joker and Harley. Obviously I’m not going to spoil anything, you will have to pick up this issue to learn all about her and to figure out Harley’s plan to pay off Jenna. Oh, and there’s a pretty awesome unexpected ending you’ll want to read too.

I absolutely loved this issue. It’s great to have a throwback to classic Harley by one of her creators. Dini does an amazing job of showing us Harley’s roots. There’s even one little tidbit in here I forgot about her past. Another great thing about Harley Loves Joker is that the story ties together so many other classic Batman villains. Bat-nerds rejoice Harley Loves Joker is full of classic baddies, fun story, and nostalgia.
