Pop Break Live: Greta Van Fleet at The Starland Ballroom in Sayreville, NJ
Words & Photos by Al Mannarino
Greta Van Fleet’s meteoric rise is nothing short of remarkable. In only one short year since the release of their first single, “Highway Tune,” the four-piece from Michigan has taken the world by storm and have become one of the most exciting new musical acts in decades.
Reminiscent of iconic rock bands like Led Zeppelin and Aerosmith, Greta Van Fleet has captured the hearts of two key demographics — the nostalgic rockers who want to experience classic ’70s rock ‘n’ roll without seeing their favorites playing in there ’70s and modern rock fans looking to find another band to listen to besides the Foo Fighters.
Last year, they played intimate New York City clubs like Mercury Lounge and The Bowery Ballroom, and last night they sold out the Starland Ballroom in Sayreville, NJ for an unforgettable night of music.
L.A.-based rockers, Dorothy opened the show with an otherworldly set that had the crowd primly amped for when Greta Van Fleet would later take the stage.
GVF lead singer Josh Kiszka took the stage and gave flowers to members of the audience before the band went into a rip-roaring rendition of “Highway Tune.”
Greta Van Fleet played through a number of tracks from their double EP, From The Fires, including “Talk on the Street,” “Flower Power,” and “Edge of Darkness.” They closed out their amazing set with fan favorites “Black Smoke Rising,” and chart-topper “Safari Song.”
After seeing this band play in a small club in Paris back in March to now seeing them play to a sold-out Starland Ballroom show, it’s safe to say that it won’t be long until they are packing areas around the world.
