Review: Deathbed #4

Spoilers from previous issues will be revealed in this review. If you’re not caught up please wait to read this review.

At the end of Issue #3 Luna and Val continued on their journey to find people to corroborate Luna’s epic life story. They learned that all his friends were being killed off by mummy ninjas. This all led them to find The Church of Luna. A little cult he started back in the 70’s. And the duo nearly died as a result because the cult took “You are what you eat” to heart. They were legit about to eat Luna and Val.

Just as Luna and Val reasoned with them mummy ninjas burst onto the scene killing his cult. This experience also made Luna realize that he’d forgotten a lot of his own story. While they were being held by the cult Luna found a head that looked VERY familiar to him, but he couldn’t remember who the person was. This prompted him to find a way to recover his memories.

Luna and Val narrowly escaped the cult and are now in the Underwater Pleasure gardens of Womba. This is a place where people go to find themselves. The underwater nuns here believe that in order to learn about yourself you must return to the womb, and are obsessed with birth. But, they’re also deadly, and not fans of Luna.

Luna has been forgetting his epic life and is desperate to remember his story. Without any friends to fill in the gaps he has to visit the memory waters here. Luna hopes that the jellyfish the nuns breed here will sting him, the venom should give his memories back. And, it doesn’t take too long before the jellyfish start to sting him. Val watches on the bank while Luna gets stung by multiple jellyfish.

The memories come flooding back to him. He sees things he completely forgot about, and sees them without any embellishments. While this is going on Val sees the nuns approach. They’re really angry and decide to pee in the pool. I’m making it sound really bad…it is, but you’ll have to pick up this issue to really see what I’m talking about. Spoilers, sweetie.

The nuns tell Val she can go get a massage and forget about Luna. Or, just sit there and watch him die. The word watch comes up quite a bit in this issue. Can Val really just stand by and watch Luna die? After her taking initiative in the last issue maybe she’ll risk her own life to save him? Obviously I’m not going to ruin the ending.

Every issue so far of Deathbed has had absurd and dark humor, and this issue delivers as well.  I certainly think it’s a safe bet to say the humor and absurdity will remain the entire run. Luna seems like this amazing character that’s just lived his life to the fullest, but when it comes to him regaining his life memories we are finally able to read between the lines and learn who Luna really is. I was happy to see his character get further development in a not so expected way.

And, Val in the last issue was finally having her own experiences. She could finally tell her own stories. She wasn’t merely a spectator. But, her fear to interact with the world is still strong. It was great to see her burst out of her shell and experience life. Again, the writers have done an amazing job of intermingling plot points for this odd couple. Even though this issue wasn’t as nuts as the last few, it certainly revealed a lot for Luna and Val.

Rating: 8/10
