Review: Deathbed #5

Spoilers from previous issues will appear in this review. If you’re not caught up to issue #4 wait to read this article.

At the end of Issue #4 Val and Luna had gone to an underwater city where Luna had angered the nuns. Luna was selfishly trying to regain all his memories by going into the jellyfish waters. The nuns caught him and angered the jellyfish. They were killing Luna.

Val stood at the side as usual. Contemplating on what to do. It took her a brief moment to decide that she was going to jump into the pool to rescue Luna. I don’t know about you, but I was glad she decided to make her own story. Issue #5 picks up with what Val saw during her time with the jellyfish.

She wakes up confused on a beach and walks around a little to find Luna who is playing in the sand making elaborate sand castles. This is working as a good grounding exercise for Luna because what the jellyfish showed him have him quite upset. He’s not the man he thought he was. Val’s facial expression in the background is perfect cause it’s like a “duh moment” for her. From here they decide to travel back to Luna’s home.

Once Val and Luna arrive on the remote island where he grew up with monsters we learn a lot about Luna’s upbringing. His parents were honestly pretty crappy. I won’t tell you how they were, but I will tell you that a lot of things make sense once learning about his time with his parents on this island. It doesn’t take long before Luna is confronted by a mummy ninja. THE mummy ninja that’s been ordering the others to kill Luna’s friends.

An insane battle takes place. Every insecurity Luna has ever had, the mummy ninja is confronting him about it. Luna is acting like he’s ready to give up. Val reminds Luna that his is now her story too. What will Luna do? Run away or confront his insecurities head on?

Sadly issue #6 will be the conclusion to Deathbed. But, this issue has done a great job of answering a lot of questions I had about Luna. It’s also set up an exciting conclusion that will lead into an unexpected story for the last issue. I have been very happy with this entire run so far, and I hope the conclusion holds up.

Rating: 8.5/10
