Battlecats is written by Mark London, illustrated by Andy King, colored by Alejandro Giraldo, and published by Mad Cave.
I was certain that Battlecats was going to be filled with fantasy and epic adventures. I wasn’t disappointed.
The story beings innocently enough. The Battlecats are given a task by their king to kill a dangerous dire beast. Along the way we uncover new facts about our characters. So, when you read the first issue you jump right into an established party of characters. They are working together as a team to survive.
The way the story unfolds in this first volume that includes issues 1-4 is not something comic readers commonly see. The story isn’t told in confusing timelines, but it plays out in a linear fashion with call-backs to important places in time. The writing style doesn’t outright spell each origin story for each character. I found this to be very refreshing. Because how often do you open a comic and everything is spelled out immediately? I enjoyed learning about each character as the story progressed.
Another thing I enjoyed about the writing of Battlecats is how immersive the world is. You get a full explanation of how Valderia came into being. Along with the birth of Valderia you learn of different Gods and cultures that shape this world. I haven’t read a comic that was this in depth with back story to a world in a while.
So what can you expect from Battlecats? Obviously battles of epic proportions. A team that is well-balanced with abilities and works together. Treachery and plot twists. The bottom line is that if you’re into fantasy, D&D, and cats you should be reading Battlecats.
