This review will have spoilers for issue #1. If you have not read By Night #1 please wait to read this review.
In the first issue we learned about two girls that were once best friends and lost touch. Jane was giving Heather another chance at friendship. Their simple trek to a local bar actually let them to a freshly abandoned mansion. And, within that freshly abandoned mansion? A strange portal…that they both climbed through.
Issue #2 picks up with Jane and Heather on the other side of the mysterious portal. So, how would you react if you were flung onto the other side of a strange portal? Would you be excited to see another world or would you have an existential crisis because it’s just too much to take? For me it would totally depend on what is there to greet me on the other side.
At the end of the first issue I was excited about the mystery of things ahead. I had a few predictions for what laid beyond the portal. Honestly I didn’t expect the direction that was taken. And, to me that’s a positive for sure. Who wants to TOTALLY predict a story? Not me.
As for returning to the real world and work after an amazing experience in another dimension would be really hard, but somehow Jane and Heather do it. Jane has some issues focusing at work as a result. But, it clicks with her that she can use the lab she works at to investigate the world beyond the portal more. So, that bit of plot sets us up for issue #3.
I mean really, who doesn’t daydream about investigating a newly abandoned mansion and finding a portal to another world? I’m sure I can’t be alone in that thinking. The way the story is unfolding is unpredictable in the best way. And, the cliffhanger endings draw intrigue and excitement to read the next issue.
