The Thrilling Adventure Hour is written by Ben Acker & Ben Blacker with illustrations by M.J. Erickson, color by Brittany Peer, and letters by Mike Fiorentino. The Thrilling Adventure Hour is published by Boom Comics.
The issue starts off with a little back story to a place that gives some movers the creeps. Then we move right into the main story where we meet Frank and Sadie Doyle. The Doyle’s have guests over and they’re all drinking what appears to be martinis. It doesn’t take long for their party to get interrupted by a young man that claims his house is being haunted.
The Doyle’s have never met this man before and are a little apprehensive about helping him at first. But, after hearing the young man’s story Sadie is convinced he needs their help, and Frank agrees. Their guests Donna and Dave seem enthusiastic about going to see a haunted house. Who doesn’t want to go to a haunted house with drinks in hand? Sounds pretty awesome to me.
Once the Doyle’s arrive at the home it’s obvious that this couple is very professional. It’s easy to tell that Sadie and Frank have been in many a haunted house in the past. They approach the situation very nonchalantly while Donna and Dave have totally different reactions to being in this situation. You could say they’re both freaking out in one way or another.
Frank and Sadie cracked me up because the veil between them being very professional and almost bored at times was very thin. That comment goes back to the whole feeling of knowing they have a lot of experience with hauntings just by their demeanor. I rather enjoyed the dry sense of humor that resulted. I could liken it to Saitama being apathetic in One Punch Man. He just knows he will eventually win every battle without much effort so things have gotten boring for him.
The story takes place in what appears to be the late 30’s/early 40’s and it works perfectly for a comic involving ghosts and haunting. A modern day podcast is absolutely akin to radio shows that existed during that era. The Thrilling Adventure Hour sets a spooky stage that is full of dry humor and mystery. I enjoy a good ghost story, and look forward to the next issue.
