SDCC 2018: DC’s Shazam! Looks Like an Absolute Joy

The knock on the films of the DCEU, and DC Comics in general, is that they’re extremely serious.

That criticism will not be levied against their lastet film — Shazam!

The first official trailer for the long-awaited big screen adaptation of the classic DC comics superhero. According to Wikipedia, this will be the first time since 1941 that Shazam! has seen the big screen since the 1941 serial The Adventures of Captain Marvel.

The plot of Shazam! follows foster kid Billy Batson (Asher Angel) who is given super powers by a mysterious wizard (Djimon Honsou). When he utters the word “Shazam!” he turns into a superhero (also named Shazam).

Hilarity ensues when Batson/Shazam and his new foster brother Freddy Freeman (Jack Dylan Grazer of Stephen King’s IT Part 1), go around testing his powers. The fun ends when Shazam meets Dr. Thaddeus Sivana (Mark Strong).

Now it should be known that there is absolutely no sign of the rumored appearance of Dwayne Johnson as Black Adam, or if there will be any other DCEU characters popping into this movie.

The film also stars Zachary Levi as Shazam! (who is absolutely awesome in the trailer), Adam Brody (The O.C. ), DJ Cotrona (From Dusk Til Dawn), Ross Butler (13 Reasons Why), Michelle Borth (Hawaii Five-0), Grace Fulton (Annabelle: Creation), and Cooper Andrews (The Walking Dead).

The film is directed by David F. Sandberg (Lights Out, Annabelle: Creation), and was written by Henry Gayden and Darren Lemke.

The rumored release date for Shazam! is April 2019.
