SDCC 2018: Supergirl Makes TV History With Transgender Superhero

Supergirl

Supergirl in the past has been given high praise for representing LGBTQ characters. Kara’s sister Alex (Chyler Leigh) was revealed to be gay in Season 2. And, her coming out story was adorable and sweet. Alex previously hadn’t really had much of a social life in the first season, so learning this and watching her relationship grow with Maggie (Floriana Lima) was heart-warming.

The exciting news about Season 4?

A panel at SDCC just revealed that a transgender character will be joining the cast. What makes it even better? This character will also be a superhero. The character is Nia Nal, AKA Dreamer. This is a HUGE deal because Dreamer will be televisions first Trans superhero. Dreamer is based on a character named Dream Girl AKA Nura Nal. We don’t yet know what powers Dreamer will possess. But, Dream Girl had the ability to foresee death.

I am beyond excited to see Nicole Maines portray Nia Nal and evolve into Dreamer. Her name may sound familiar because she is an activist, and she has also previously acted in the TV series Royal Pains.

Representation is important. And, I can’t wait to learn more about Nia Nal.
