It was a summer Sunday filled with punk rock and protest anthems as Rise Against brought its Mourning in Amerika Tour to The Stone Pony Summer Stage in Asbury Park, New Jersey. Joining Rise Against on the tour was AFI (A Fire Inside) featuring Davey Havok fresh off a cameo at The Smashing Pumpkins 30th Anniversary Show days before at the PNC Bank Arts Center, and Anti-Flag.

Anti-Flag made their presence known with an energizing, chaotic storm of politically and socially charged hits opening with ‘The Press Corpse.’ In between their impressive catalog of hits lead guitarist and vocalist Justin Sane promoted positive messages touching on building “a community with no racism or homophobia.” Prior to the end of the set, Anti-Flag took the time to thank fans for keeping the punk rock scene alive finally leaving a message of spreading peace and being a better race.

Asbury kept the crazy energy flowing as Davey Havok entered the arena with his signature charismatic, gothic flair. AFI fed the crowd their classics like “Girls Not Grey,” and “Love Like Winter.” Ending on their 2006 hit “Miss Murder,” AFI kept it tight with only a 10 song set. However short the set was the band, originally from Ukiah, California, brought some of their West Coast charm and put on a spectacular blaze before the fire burned out.

Ending the night on a promising note, Tim Mcllrath of Rise Against stormed the stage igniting the crowd for a blistering 90-minute set. The vocals and instruments were razor sharp, with Mcllrath emphatically raising his fist, stretching into the crowd and soothing the masses with the bands signature punk rock and melodic hardcore combination that gained them their success.

In between songs, Mcllrath reminisced on past years touring the country, playing at the Pony, playing their last Warped Tour and gave the crowd a nice surprise by video chatting Jim Lindberg from Pennywise. Playing a mix of classics from Siren Song of the Counterculture, Endgame, and Wolves, Rise Against kept the crowd chanting for more, even during their acoustic set. Finally ending with Prayer of the Refugee, Asbury Park went crazy into the end with Punk Rock greatness.
