Comic Review: Tales of Time #2

Tales of Time Issue TwoTales of Time is written and drawn by Tyler Bray, printed by Comix Well Spring.

I really thought I wrote a review from Tales of Time #1. Apparently I didn’t, which is extra terrible because it was an awesome debut issue. So, I’m going to review #2 and try to keep spoilers to a minimum. But seriously, read both issues and then wait impatiently for #3 with the rest of us.

Quick summary: Tales of Time follows a child Amelia Earheart and an older, adult Ernest Hemingway as they, well, travel through time after being sucked into a wormhole. They learn from a floating goldfish, eloquently named Bob, that these wormholes are popping up all over the place, causing parallel universes to merge and causing general chaos throughout all of time and space. It is up to this unlikely, historical duo to solve the mystery and, hopefully, find a way to stop it.

We have gone through the second wormhole and the first thing I have to say is…dinosaurs. I. Love. Dinosaurs. If you’re going to have a story that involves time travel, you need to have dinosaurs and Tyler Bray gave me dinosaurs in the second issue. Most importantly, a T-rex. Also in this land of dinosaurs is a spaceman. An astronaut, to be precise, but I like the term spaceman. Like Amelia and Hemingway, this spaceman was also randomly pulled into this time and/or universe. The problem is, he has been here a long time, and after this long time, he may not be exactly stable, he may not even be totally human anymore (if he ever truly was..hmmm…).

I love the art and overall design for this comic. It has an Adventure Time-y and Kenny and the Chimp vibe. It has that same kind of humor as well. With Amelia being goofy and childlike and Hemingway having to be the one actually figuring things out. Plus we have a dead, floating, talking goldfish and I mean, how can you not be amused by that? There’s also Paul the talking cat who has thumbs. I like that child Amelia is obsessed with planes and always wears her aviator hat and goggles and Hemingway remains so calm and so accepting of all the ridiculousness happening around him. These personalities just seem to really fit and make for a solid dynamic duo.

OVERALL SCORE: 9 / 10
