215 Block Party Review: Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Goose Island Throw a Hoppin’ Jawn

Pop Break Live: 215 Block Party featuring The Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Twin Peaks, Joey Purp, and Mannequin Pussy at The Electric Factory in Philadelphia, PA

Although the summer is now officially over, that doesn’t mean there isn’t any more magical music moments to look forward to. So was the case with last weekend’s Goose Island 215 Block Party featuring MANNEQUIN PUSSY, Joey Purp, Twin Peak, Yeah Yeah Yeahs.

Back in March, Goose Island opened up a new brewhouse in Philadelphia and in celebration of the Chicago-based brewery coming to the city of brotherly love, they decided to bring their annual Chi-Town event with them along with some amazing beer and a night of unforgettable music.

First up was hometown punk rockers, MANNEQUIN PUSSY, who made mention to the fact that attendees might not know they were actually performing that day because of the lack of inclusion in local advertisements. That didn’t stop guitarist/singer Marisa Dabice from having a great time on stage and getting the audience amped for the rest of the night.

While waiting for Chicago rapper, Joey Purp to start his set, I made my way over to the beer section of the festival to try out some of Goose Island’s best brews including variations of their famed Bourbon County line. The layout of the festival took advantage of the Electric Factory’s large parking lot with the beer and food located in the front of the building with Goose Island photo ops like a parked city bus and giant cassette tape available for attendees and a giant stage set up in the back.

Following Joey Purp was another Chicago based act, Twin Peaks. The garage rock 5-piece played a stellar set filled with songs from last year’s Sweet ’17 Singles collection, as well as, older songs like “I Found A New Way,” “Butterfly,” and “Boomers.”

Then it came time to the moment everyone was waiting for. At 9:45 pm, Karen O, Nick Zinner, and Brian Chase took the stage along with David Pajo to a packed out audience and launched into “Rich” from their debut breakthrough album, Fever to Tell. Yeah Yeah Yeahs have only played a handful of shows this year, with most of those being big festival appearances like The Governors Ball, Field Trip, and Osheaga Festival, so to see such an iconic band play a more intimate gig like this was very special.

The band played a career spanning set filled with deep cuts from their four studio albums, as well as, hits like “Y Control,” “Maps,” and “Heads Will Roll.” Check out the full setlist and more photos from the night below.
