Review: Skyward #6

There will be spoilers from previous issues of Skyward in this review. If you haven’t read issues 1-5 please wait to read this review. Unless, of course, you enjoy spoilers and want caught up to the present.

This issue begins with an all new tale called Here There be Dragonflies. We get to see a family boarding a train. With every issue I love learning about how things we take for granted work in a world without gravity. In this issue we learn about travel via trains. Passengers obviously have to be fully strapped in for safety, otherwise they will be smashed against a wall together. Edison is a passenger and guards are all over asking the whereabouts of Willa.

Before long we see Willa hiding in the luggage cabin of a train. This is where we get caught up on all the gory details of the past. Willa’s dad was killed in front of her, and she is now a fugitive on a mission. Her mission? To restore gravity. It was her father’s dying wish. Edison is of course helping Willa along the way as they travel towards Kansas City.

Barrow is still in hot pursuit of Willa. He does not want gravity restored. If it were imagine how many of his products would be deemed useless. Barrow would no longer be the savior. He can’t risk that. So, mild spoiler but it’s important for me to talk about it in this review. Barrow decides to turn off all the trains to risk a PR nightmare.

Willa and Edison notice that they’re no longer pressed against a wall and are once again floating. This makes it clear that the train has stopped moving. They quickly peek outside to see what the situation is. Willa is relieved to see that they’re in a forest and have plenty of things to grab hold to so they don’t float away. But, Edison knows something she doesn’t. There’s a reason people don’t live in the forest any more.

I wasn’t sure if Skyward could get any better than it already is, but issue #6 proved that it can. With every issue I was giving at least 8/10 Star reviews. Plot development, character development, this is a superb story that any sci-fi fan needs to be reading. After vol. 1 I wasn’t sure what direction issue #6 would take. But, the story just got so much better. A new factor has been added in that I never saw coming. It’s easy to catch up on this amazing series. Vol. 1 is out today along with issue #6.

Rating: 9.5/10
