The Sea.Hear.Now Music & Art Festival is a big deal. We all know about the bands, and the surfing…but you’d be surprised at a number of cool events happening in-and-around the festival you might be sleeping on.
Art at the Carousel House:
The famed carousel at the south end of the Asbury Park boardwalk is one of the most iconic structures in the city that Bruce built. This weekend you can check out the “Art at the Carousel House” installation — curated by the Wooden Walls Project, Asbury Park Boardwalk, and Parlor Gallery. The exhibit will feature new works by visiting artist from California, Mike Shine. There will also be works from other previous Wooden Walls artists.
For the past two month, the Wooden Walls Public Art Project has invited artists to the space to (hopefully) gain inspiration from this special structure and create site-specific pieces. The Carousel House will be open on and off all weekend long.
Live Music at The Danny Clinch Transparent Gallery:
The Danny Clinch Transparent Gallery is one of the coolest spots in Asbury Park. Located at The Asbury Hotel, this gallery features all of Clinch’s best work.
This weekend the festival will have a bunch of events in the brick and mortar building, as well as extended throughout the festival grounds.
Artists such as Brandon Boyd of Incubus, G. Love, Clint Maedgen and Ben Jaffe of Preservation Hall Jazz Band, Ian from Deer Tick, Brian from Front Bottoms, Nicole Atkins, and other performing artists will be hanging out showing off their artwork. This will take place at the “pop-up gallery” on the festival grounds.

On Sunday inside the gallery there will be a special cover show as local artists will be performing one song from a band performing at the festival. This will start at 4 p.m.
Artists include: Cranston Dean, Avery Mandeville and the Man Devils, Rachel Ana Dobken, Levy & The Oaks, Joe Coonan, Tara Dente, Natalie Farrel, Dan Apy of the The Mercury Brothers, Ruby Dear, and Matt Raspanti of Thee Idea Men.
SHN After-Party at The Asbury Lanes:
Located a stone’s throw from the festival grounds and Clinch Gallery, The Asbury Lanes hosts a special after-party featuring Incubus’ turntablist DJ Kilmore. Kilmore is no stranger to Asbury Park, having DJ-ed an Incubus after-party two summers ago at House of Independents in Asbury Park. Click here for tickets.
SHN After-Parties at Asbury Park Yacht Club:
Part surf shop, part sweet music venue and locals bar, APYC is hosting two killer nights of music. On Saturday night it’s a sonically-superior one-two punch with The Cold Seas, and our friends The Vaughns. On Sunday night September it’s The Double Negatives.
SHN After-Party at The Wonder Bar:
On Saturday night, The Wonder Bar will host SHN festival performers Twin Peaks along with local awesomes, Lowlight. Click here for tickets.
90s by Nature Dance Party at House of Independents:
Sometimes after a day-long festival you need to THROW DOWN with some ’90s jams. DJ Tyler Valentine is on the 1s and 2s, and it’s a free show. Go enjoy. You earned it.
SHN After-Party at Langosta Lounge:
Philly’s St. James and the Apostles will be performing on the stage of this boardwalk-based restaurant and bar.
SHN After-Party at The Stone Pony:
The legendary Stone Pony will play host to the “Ocean Avenue Stomp.” This two-band event will feature the big brass sound of the iconic Preservation Hall Jazz Band, and the smoking hot blues of Danny Clinch’s Tangiers Blue Band. Click here for tickets.
