I’ve been working a lot lately, overtime and on weekends, so on October 4th, I decided to take the day off and head out to Silver Spring, Maryland.
What was my reasoning for taking off and heading up to Silver Spring you ask?
Well it was to watch the 1979 classic horror film Phantasm at the AFI Theatre, & also meet the director himself Don Coscarelli, to kick off the AFI’s “Spooky Movie International Horror Film Festival”
Don recently wrote a memoir/autobiography about his filmmaking career, titled True Indie: Life and Death in Filmmaking, and he’s doing a tour for the release of his book. When I walked in the theater around 6:30 p.m. (the film started around 7:15 p.m.), I saw him set up, signing books, so I purchased two copies, one for me, and one for my brother, (a much bigger “phan” of Don’s work than me). I also brought my Phantasm record, and my brother’s copy of Don’s film before Phantasm, Kenny and Company.
When I was next in line to meet him, he thanked me for coming out, and then when I showed him my brothers DVD & record of Kenny & Company he was shocked and amazed to see someone own a copy of this record, so he told me to tell my brother he’s one cool dude in his books! The event was great, there were many “phans” that attended the event, & Don was happy/excited to meet everyone that attended.
