So, what happens when the doctor regenerates into a female?
The short answer? Pure Awesome.
Jodie Whittaker felt right at home as The Doctor and it was evident. She was splendid, charismatic, and witty — character traits that I believe all 13 Doctors share. As The 13th Doctor, Whittaker did a wonderful job at navigating Planet Earth with no memory, and spoiler, no TARDIS.
If you have been a Whovian for years you understand that if a regeneration happens The Doctor’s mind isn’t the best right after. If you’re new to the show, yes that is a thing and it’s constant. Also welcome to the fandom.
That’s right, we didn’t get to see a new companion walk into the TARDIS and say those words we all love “It’s bigger on the inside.” I’m sure that very line will come along eventually though. Speaking of companions, in this season we already got introduced to quite an amazing group of them — Ryan (Tosin Cole), Graham (Bradley Walsh), and Yas (Mandip Gill).
In the past we’ve seen multiple companions get introduced as the season progressed. But, this premiere took a different direction and trust me, it worked. Each companion not only got introduced but their characters got some amazing development. I was pleasantly surprised by the storytelling.
Another thing that was totally new about this series is that The Doctor makes her own sonic screwdriver. We have never seen a Doctor make their own screwdriver. This blew my mind. I loved the concept of this. The 13th Doctor making her own screwdriver established in my mind that she will be insanely resourceful and creative in a way no other previous Doctor has been. Honestly this whole episode was nothing but 13 being amazingly creative to solve problems.
Ironically as much as I loved the fact that she made her own screwdriver, but as a second generation Whovian I also had to let this concept grow on me. If other viewers weren’t fans of this I certainly understand why. I had to sit on it overnight and ended up loving the concept after tearing apart the reasons behind this scene and ended up loving it.
Overall I love Jodie Whittaker and I love Doctor Who. I can’t wait to see what’s in store for us this season.
